A Family That Plays Together Stays Together

by Clare Flockton

At any time of year Kanata Theatre always seems to be a hive of activity. As the holidays descend on us quickly, the buzz seems to get even louder at the Ron Maslin Playhouse.
The holidays are a wonderful time of year for Kanata Theatre to send out a great big thank you to the community at large for helping to make its theatre company a roaring success. What better way to say thank you than with a jovial musical that is sure to lift the spirits and bring out the kid in us all.

This year's holiday production is a musical production called The Gallant Tailor. It is a story of a happy little tailor who loved to sing and sew and sew and sing. One day the happy little tailor took out his fly swatter and killed seven tiny flies with one almighty smack. News spread that he had killed seven angry men with one almighty blow. The tailor, thinking himself rather brave, set out on a wild and fun packed adventure where he came across some pretty big and ugly giants.

The Gallant Tailor is definitely considered a “family production” not only because it is a show that is sure to entertain the entire family but because entire families are going to entertain you in the show. Both the Williams family and the Harrison family have realized that a family who play together do indeed stay together. I had a chance to ask Tristan Williams, aged six, what he thought was the best part of acting with his Mom, Dad and two siblings. He responded by telling me, “it is great because I don’t get a chance to miss anyone in my family”. Matriarch of the Harrison clan, Shelley Jean speaks on behalf of her family of four, “when we are here (the Ron Maslin Playhouse), we are all here together which is wonderful.” Both families have really enjoyed rehearsing with each other and they look forward to sharing the stage with the rest of the cast.

If you are looking for a way to brighten up your holiday season this year, consider a trip to see Kanata Theatre bring you an uplifting show with: two ugly giants, a princess, a page boy, a sweet little tailor and so many more wonderful characters. The Gallant Tailor runs December 27, 28, 29, 1pm & 3:30pm at the Ron Maslin Playhouse, located at 1 Ron Maslin Way, Kanata. Tickets are $5.00, general admission.
